Men’s Ice Hockey Champions 2021

Mental Performance Coach Mirjam Wallin was part of coaching staff for Rauman Lukko Men’s team during their rise to Championship in 2021. She coached players one-on-one, using her expertize on performance and emotional well-being to help players execute at a higher level more consistently. Here are a few stories from the Champs themselves.

“Hockey is tough both physically and mentally. In coaching, you get to discuss important things with an outsider, who helps you get perspective and find tools to regulate your own reactions, and deal with things out of your control.

In all respects it pays off to commit to regular coaching sessions throughout the season, it allowed us to prevent frustration and have tools already in place for when challenges arise.

The coaching process has been amazing, only good things to say about it. Mirjam doesn’t give you the easy way out, but instead guides you to truly deal with things, by giving you space to talk. It’s been exactly what I needed.

Growth takes place outside the comfort zone, so it has really benefited me to have to figure out my own solutions. Mirjam does help, but never too early, so that you have to do the necessary work first.

Many things that hinder performance can actually be mental. There’s no use sitting on them by yourself. Mental coaching increases well-being and would benefit anyone. I recommend giving mental coaching a try!”

“Mental coaching has helped me progress as a player and as a person. I’m sure I would regret it, if I had never started coaching all those years ago.

Through coaching I’ve improved execution under pressure, being consistent and managing expectations. When I don’t strive for perfection, I perform better. I’m happy with how I’ve been able to regulate my mental state.

Coaching helps you become aware of things that have affected you. As you talk about it together, you release more energy to focus on hockey itself. You get the most out of sessions by just being yourself - there’s no point in putting up a front of any sorts.

Working with Mirjam is easy and effortless. It’s so important to have trust. Time flies in coaching and I often feel relieved afterwards.

If you’re trying to find ways to progress as a player, I recommend trying mental performance coaching - it’s definitely worth a shot.”
